LeAP!

Lesbian Advocates-Philippines (LeAP!), Inc. is a new lesbian NGO with old beginnings. Formed by lesbian activists and advocates who have been involved in lesbian rights advocacy work since the early 1990s, LeAP! intends to bring lesbian rights advocacy and visibility work in the agenda of various local, national and international arena. Previous lessons and learnings in advocacy and activist work guide the group's organizers as they surge towards a more sustainable and impact-oriented action in the new millennium.

LeAP! is a collaborative effort of 25 individuals who have banded together in April 2000 to work towards the realization of common vision, mission and goals.

VISION

A society that recognizes and respects the responsible expression and exercise of reproductive and sexual rights and choices of all people regardless of their sex, gender, sexual orientation and other status.

MISSION

To raise societal awareness on the various issues and concerns faced by lesbians such as human rights, sexuality, political participation, health and other gender-related issues and concerns;

To engage and involve the lesbian community and various stakeholders and change agents such as civil society and government in bringing about positive, empowering and liberating changes in the lives of lesbians;

To provide support services to the lesbian community and their families;

To build linkages, alliances and cooperation with local, national, regional and international organizations and groups with similar missions and goals.

To build, develop and enhance the capability and capacity of lesbians to become advocates and leaders in the LGBT movement.

PROGRAMS

Information, Education and Communication Programme - LeAP! aims to raise societal awareness on the various issues and concerns faced by lesbians such as human rights, sexuality, political participation, health and other gender-related issues and concerns. This will be done through education and information activities, e.g. fora, seminars, discussions, skills building training and workshops for lesbians, their families and other change agents in society.

Capacity Building Programme - LeAP! offers training and capability building workshops to help build, develop and enhance the capability and capacity of lesbians to become advocates and leaders in the LGBT movement. LeAP! also facilitates workshops aimed at enhancing self-esteem, communication skills and self-worth of lesbians.

Network and Advocacy Programme - LeAP! undertakes proactive lobbying and campaign that will bring about legislative and policy changes in areas affecting lesbians and other persons discriminated on the basis of gender and sexual orientation. Such forms of advocacy include media advocacy, legislative and direct institutional advocacy.

Research and Documentation - LeAP! conducts research and compiles documentation on issues and concerns faced by lesbians in order to form a solid basis for its advocacy initiatives.

Community Building Programme - To provide support services to the lesbian community and their families, LeAP! aims to establish and /or support the establishment of centers or safe spaces for lesbians. LeAP! organized LeAPunan, a dynamic community of lesbians engaged in support services.

Publications and Productions - Apart from providing information on lesbian issues and concerns through publications, LeAP! promotes the creative expressions of lesbians through literature and artistic productions. LeAP! is coming out with a newsletter called LeAP! Services and is soon launching its Website.

Resource Center - LeAP! is currently housing lesbian books, magazines, journals, articles, video tapes, research papers and other forms and materials in print and video form to serve the information needs of lesbians and other interested parties.

Events Organizing - LeAP! collaborate with other LGBT groups in planning and organizing LGBT-related political and social activities such as the annual Pride March, artistic productions, launchings, parties, mobilizations and other activities.
